Scripture in the Morning #62
From the a Puritan prayer book…
“Oh Lord, move me to honor you by believing and trusting in you before I feel, for great is the sin if I let my feelings be the measure of my faith.”
Some of you may be a bit like me in this… I am not so much a “feeling” sort of person. I really covet at times (and I think here covet in a good way) those brothers and sisters in Christ around me who have great resounding feelings of awe and thrill at how the Lord works in them. Me? I rarely “feel” such things. Thrilled at knowing the things of God? Yes. But, rarely is it a “feeling” that I experience.
The point perhaps of this prayer is to realize that even if we do not “feel” as though God is at work in us – He is at work in us. We know this because He tells us so in His Word. Even if we do not “feel” His presence – He is there. We know this because He has promised us…
1 Corinthians 3:16 Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?
We may not “feel” the presence of God the Holy Spirit in us – or we may – but either way, He is there because God has stated so. He is always with us, even if we feel Him not…
Matthew 28:20 And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Back to the prayer… may we trust Him and His promises even when we have no “special feelings” that validate the trust. May we simply trust Him and walk in that trust no matter what we feel (or do not feel). May God move us to be more trusting of His promises – even when we cannot see where walking in those promises will take us.
