1 Corinthians 1:1-17

1 Corinthians 1:1-17

– The Context of 1 Corinthians
– Rome destroyed Corinth in 146 BC, and recolonized it with Roman citizens over about a
100 year period
– Corinth was an affluent mix of mostly Roman, some Greek and a small Jewish group of
people
– During his 2 nd missionary journey (49-52 AD), Paul established the Corinthian church –
spending a year and a half there

– Paul wrote 1 Corinthians in 56 AD on his 3 rd missionary journey during the three years he

spent in Ephesus
1 Cor 1:1,2 Paul, appointed by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and our
brother Sosthenes, 2 To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those sanctified
in Christ Jesus, appointed to be saints together with all those who in every place
call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours

– “appointed by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus” – Paul did what he did by the
Sovereign Determination of God
– “To the church of God that is in Corinth” – Paul Established the Church in Corinth 5 Years
Earlier. Yet it was not Paul’s Church; it was not the Corinthian People’s Church – it was God’s
Church…
– “to those sanctified in Christ Jesus” – What does this mean?
– To be sanctified is to be “grown in Christ.” It is to be changed within our hearts in a day-
by-day progression by God’s grace
– “appointed to be saints together”
– We are all Saints
– The Greek word means “those set apart.” We are those set apart from the rest of the
world to be the Lord’s Vessel of Blessing to Humanity and to Proclaim the Glory of God
to the World
1 Cor 1:3-5 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 4 I give
thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you
in Christ Jesus, 5 that in every way you were enriched in Him in all speech and
all knowledge
– Great Theology from the Introduction.
– Paul thanks God for the Grace He has given the Corinthian Believers.
– We are Enriched by God’s Grace
– Our Knowledge of God and the Desire to Proclaim the things of God is from Grace
– V1-5: Our Points to this Point
– We Worship in God’s church – not “our” Church
– We are all “Set Apart” as Saints by God’s Choosing
– We, as Saints, are Grown by Grace – God Sanctifies Us…
– God’s Grace Gives us the Knowledge of God that we can Share with Others…
– We should Thank God for all this Grace

1 Cor 1:6-8 Even as the testimony of Christ is confirmed among you 7you are not lacking in
any gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 8 who will sustain
you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ

– “you are not lacking in any gift” – The Lord Equips Us in Every Way to Serve Him by Serving
and Blessing Others. Every we Gift we Need as Saints are ours – though we are a Work in
Progress…
– “[Christ] will sustain you to the end” – As Saints being Sanctified in God’s Church, We are
Sustained by Grace until He calls us Home
1 Cor 1:9 God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus

Christ our Lord.

God is Faithful, He will Always be with You as You Minister His Love to Others…
1 Cor 1:10,11 I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you
agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the
same mind and the same judgment. 11 For it has been reported to me by Chloe's
people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers. 12 What I mean is that
each one of you says, “I follow Paul,” or “I follow Apollos,” or “I follow
Cephas,” or “I follow Christ.” 13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you?
Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?

– It was God’s Church. But some among the People were following Men, and Following Men is
Blasphemy
1 Cor 1:12,13 What I mean is that each one of you says, “I follow Paul,” or “I follow Apollos,”
or “I follow Cephas,” or “I follow Christ.” 13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul
crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?

– The Grace in Paul was like the Grace in John the Baptist
John 3:30 He must increase, but I must decrease
1 Cor 1:14-17 I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15 so that no
one may say that you were baptized in my name. 16 I did baptize also the
household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone
else. 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not
with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.
– Our Testimony of the Lord is Not About Us. Our testimony should not draw attention to any man
or any Church. Our testimony should Draw Attention to our triune God and His Glory
Our Summary
– We Worship in God’s Church
– We are Saints Set Apart to Spread God’s Love into the World
– We are Sanctified and Equipped for Service by God’s Grace at Work in Us
– As We Minister, all Attention is to be Drawn to God and His Grace
