1 Corinthians 6:12-20

1 Corinthians 6:12-20

– In 51 AD in Corinth, the Pharisees had Historically added Moral Rule after Moral Rule –
– Dietary Rules
– Cleanliness Rules
– Rules on Male/Female Interactions…
– The Corinthian Believers in 51 AD Responded to these Rules by Saying…
“we have Liberty in Christ – we Will Not Follow Your Rules…”

– Christian Liberty is a Two-Part Idea:
Idea #1: We are no Longer under the Law and Live under Grace…
Idea #2: We are Free from Man-made Religious Customs and Rules and Need Follow

Only Biblical Mandates (and Civil Authorities)

1 Cor 6:12,13a All things are lawful for me but not all things are helpful. All things are lawful
for me, but I will not be dominated by anything. 13 “Food is meant for the
stomach and the stomach for food”—and God will destroy both one and the
other…”

– What is the Holy Spirit saying Through Paul?
– We can Eat, generally what we want and…
many of the other “Man-made Rules” were also Without Merit…
"IN ESSENTIALS UNITY, IN NON-ESSENTIALS LIBERTY,

IN ALL THINGS CHARITY.”

– The Corinthians Went So Far that They were Not Even Following God’s Rules…
– They redefined what was Essential vs. what was Non-essential…
– They were basically saying “We are Free to do Anything we Want”…
1 Cor 6:13 “Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food”—and God will destroy
both one and the other. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the
Lord, and the Lord for the body.”

– Christian Liberty is not a Wrong Idea, but the Abusing Christian Liberty is Sinful – and this is
what the Corinthians were doing…
– Abusing Christian Liberty is a Great Deal like the Sin of Presumption… “After all, I live by
Grace, not Works — so what I do does not so much Matter…”
– We do Not Relate to God Based Upon Works…But our Works matter in How we can Bless
others or be a Stumbling Block
– In 51 AD the Corinthian Believers Went Overboard and were starting to partake in Sexual and
other Self-centered Sin…
1 Cor 6:14,15 “And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by His power. 15 Do you not
know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of
Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never!”

– The Key Point Here:
– When they (or we) Abuse Christian Liberty and partake in Self-centered Sin thinking we
are “OK” because we are not “Under the law” – we are Dishonoring Christ…

– A Modern-Day Variant of This is Anti-Legalism…
– Legalism is where Churches add all sorts of Rules and treat them as if they were
Biblical…
– Anti-Legalism is rebelling against and not following those rules
– Anti-legalism also can be Abused
– Do we sometimes Use Our Liberty in Christ to Support our own Sin Habit?
Do we realize that while our Conduct does not Affect our Salvation – it Can Affect our Witness
& Testimony and it Can Dishonor God?
Do We Abuse Christian Liberty such that we a Stumbling Block to our Loved Ones?
– None of us are Above Abusing Christian Liberty…
– Do We Realize that We are Not Here to Serve Self?
– We Exist to be Used as a Vessel of Blessing to Others as we proclaim the Glory of God
onto Them…
– Our Body, Our Time, Our Person is Not to be Used to Serve Self – it is to be Used to
Serve Others as Our Expression of Love for the Lord…
1 Cor 6:16-20 Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with
her? For, as it is written, “The two will become one flesh.” 17 “But he who is
joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with Him. 18 Flee from sexual immorality.
Other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral
person sins against his own body.” 18  Or do you not know that your body is a
temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not
your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So declare the glory of God in
your body.
Our Take-Home Message
– Christian Liberty is a Beautiful Thing…
– Christian Liberty can be Sinfully Abused – even by us…
– Christian Liberty is Designed to Free us to Love Others as Our Expression

of Love for the Lord…

Gal 5:13 You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge

the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love

– Our Body – our Entire Person – is Not Designed for Self – it is Designed for God and
Others
– We are the Temple of God the Holy Spirit – God Himself Resides in Us…
May we act Accordingly…

Colossians 3:17

And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving

thanks to God the Father through Him.
