Malachi 1:1-2a

Malachi 1:1-2a

– Malachi Background
– Written by Malachi in Judah
– Almost nothing personally is known about Malachi
– Written in 460 BC — about 60 years after Haggai — three generations later
– Judah was one of 120 provinces in Persia
– the Temple of Haggai was completed… but the Prosperity for Judah at the time of
Haggai was no more
– Cyrus, the protector of Judah, has died and the Medo-Persian leaders no longer protected
Judah
– Judah was reduced to 20 X 25 miles with an impoverished population of 150,000
– Judah was surrounded by opposition and infiltrated by enemies
– the main enemies were from Edom — the Edomites
– After Haggai (520 BC) the Jews expected a Messiah to come… a military or a political
leader that would give Judah rule over their captors

– Just like at the time of Joel…
– The Judahites thought
– that the Biblical God was for them alone
– that they should be given military rule over all the world by a Savior whose main
interest was the Glory of their Nation

Malachi 1:1-2a The oracle of the word of the Lord to Israel by Malachi. 2 “I have loved you,”

says the Lord. But you say, “How have you loved us?”

– The Judahite Complaint…
– They were Dissatisfied and Questioned God’s Love for them…
– They measured God’s love for them in terms of God giving them what they wanted…

and they were not getting it

– they wanted Freedom, Power, Victory over their Enemies & Glory for Judah

and they were not getting it

– What They Did Not Realize…
– that God’s Love is Defined by God
– that God Determines How He Manifests His Love
– that God knows better what we need than we do
– that God is not interested in any one Nation’s Glory or in the Glory of Man
– God’s Love for us is typically Spiritual and Eternal
– that God’s Love is Designed to equip us to Better Serve and Declare God’s Glory
– that God’s Love for us is not typically Measured in Terms of our Comfort
– that God’s Love for us will Never Facilitate our Glory
Malachi 1:1 The oracle of the word of the Lord to Israel by Malachi.
– At this time, there was no Israel – it had been defeated in 722 BC – 260 years and 16 generations
earlier. There was no formal Judah as a Nation either… it was defeated in 522 BC – 100 years and
5 generations earlier

– the Prophets use the word “Israel” 511 times in the Scriptures, with over 300 of these references
are after Israel as a Nation had been Dissolved
– The Judahites View was that the term “Israel” referred to those descending from Abraham. They
thought that Israel refers to them based upon Ethnicity – those who received the Abrahamic
Promise
– The Abrahamic Promise
Gen 12:1-3 Now the Lord said to Abram… I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless
you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those
who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the
families of the earth shall be blessed.”

– But Who is the Heir to the Promise?
Gal 3:29 if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.
Gal 3:9 So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.
Rom 9:6b-7 For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, 7 and not all are

children of Abraham because they are his offspring
– Malachi is a Prophet speaking to All Believers — Including You
– The Entire Old Testament Relates to Every Generation of those In Christ. The promises to the
“House of Israel” are to Every Generation of those In Christ
Eze 36:23-27 “Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God 24 I will take you
from the nations and gather you from all the countries 25 I will sprinkle clean
water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all
your idols I will cleanse you. 26 And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit
I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and
give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you
to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.

Take Home Message
– The Entire Old Testament is written for all Believers for all time
– The Spiritual Promises in the Old Testament Apply to us
– We are the Seed of Abraham
– We are Israel — the Israel of God
– Malachi was sent both to teach the people in 460 BC and to teach us
– God uses the context then to teach us now
– What is God teaching us?
– God Loves us is as He sees fit to Love us…
– we have no right to define how God should Love us
– God’s Love for us is greater as He determines it than it would be were we to have
Him Love us as we desire to be loved
– Knowing that all the Spiritual Promises of the OT are ours is very Comforting
– Knowing that God knows better how to Love us than we do is also Comforting
– Knowing that God’s Love for us is not Designed for our Glory but for His Glory
and for Equipping us to Serve and Love Others Changes How we Live…

John 3:30 He must increase, but I must decrease
