Malachi 2:10-16

Malachi 2:10-16

– God’s Reprimands are Designed to:
– Challenge our Hearts
– Move us to Evaluate Ourselves
– Used by the Holy Spirit in the Gift of Repentance/Obedience
– For our Blessing
– God’s Reprimands are not designed to:
– limit or constrain
– demean or beat down
– In Malachi 2:10-16 a Series of Reprimands are given to Judah in 460 BC and the Reprimands that
Blessed them then – and Bless us now
Mal 2:10-12 Have we not all one Father? Has not one God created us? Why then are we
faithless to one another, profaning the covenant of our fathers? 11 Judah has been
faithless, and abomination has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem. For
Judah has profaned the sanctuary of the Lord, which He loves, and has married
the daughter of a foreign god. 12 May the Lord cut off from the tents of Jacob
any descendant of the man who does this, who brings an offering to the Lord of
– The Main Issue…
– Both the Ethnic Jews in Ethnic Judah and the Remnant in Judah (Spiritual Israel) have
relational problems – they have married non-believers

– Biblically, Christians should not Marry Non-believers – and like all commands, the command is
for our better good and the good of those around us…
– How Should We Relate to Non-Believers?
– View them with Respect and Dignity
– Be Kind and Loving towards them
– Have a Passion for their Better Good
– Declare the Glory of God to them
– We should love our neighbors and endeavor to serve them
Matt 19:19 You shall love your neighbor as yourself
– we should Bless our Neighbor
Romans 15:2 Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.
– We are to Impact our Neighbors for the Lord and for their benefit…
– but not be impacted by our Neighbor’s Worldliness
– Where does the Problem Arise in Relating Deeply to a Non-Believer?
– When they and their World-View influences Us, Moving Us Away from the Lord and
Away from Proclaiming His Excellencies…
– We are to Influence the World Without Being Influenced by the World…

– Our Primary Relational Pursuit is to seek after God and to be a Blessing in the Lord’s hands to
aid others in their Seeking after the Lord…
– The Scriptures Command that we Marry only Believers…
2 Cor 6:14 Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has
righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?

– A Second Reprimand…
Mali 2:13,14 And this second thing you do. You cover the Lord’s altar with tears, with
weeping and groaning because He no longer regards the offering or accepts it
with favor from your hand. 14 But you say, “Why does he not?” Because the
Lord was witness between you and the wife of your youth, to whom you have
been faithless, though she is your companion and your wife by covenant.
– Both the Ethnic Jews in Judah and the Remnant (Spiritual Israel w/in Judah) have been Faithless
in Marriage – Adultery was Rampant
– In Judah at that Time, Men were allowed to Marry Multiple Women; Men had life-and-death
power over women in the case of adultery & Men could have Concubines and go to Prostitutes
Mal 2:15,16 Did He not make them one, with a portion of the Spirit in their union? And what
was the one God seeking? Godly offspring. So guard yourselves in your spirit,
and let none of you be faithless to the wife of your youth. 16 For the man who
does not love his wife but divorces her, says the Lord, the God of Israel, covers
his garment with violence, says the Lord of hosts. So guard yourselves in your
spirit, and do not be faithless.”

– The Biblical View –
– Remain faithful in your marriage
– to not be faithful is to dishonor the other and to dishonor God
– it is necessary to be faithful in order to serve the other
The Take Home Message
– God’s reprimands are designed to be a blessing to us & to those around us
– The primary relationship in our lives is our relationship with God
– All other relationships flow from our relationship with God
– All our Relationships should have the Goal of Drawing others Closer to the Lord
– Marriage for a Christian is Limited to Marriage to other Christians
– Husbands are called to be Honorable towards their One Wife & to Love and Serve Her

Romans 15:5,6
