Malachi 2:17-3:6

Malachi 2:17-3:6

– God’s Reprimands are Designed to Challenge our Hearts & to Move us to Evaluate Ourselves.
His reprimands are used by the Holy Spirit in the Gift of Repentance/Obedience & are for our
Blessing & for Equipping us to be a Blessing
Malachi 2:17 You have wearied the Lord with your words. But you say, “How have we
wearied Him?” By saying, “Everyone who does evil is good in the sight of the
Lord, and He delights in them.” We ask, “Where is the God of justice?”
– The Entitled Judahites were Demanding Justice from an Assumption that They “Deserved
Blessings” and that their Enemies Deserved Judgment…
– An Aside… We Should Never Ask for Justice – We Don’t Want What We Actually Deserve…
Rom 6:23a For the wages of sin is death…
– God Follows the People’s Reprimand to Him with Encouragement. Why?
– Perhaps Because God Always Blesses His People with His Corrective Commands…
Malachi 3:1 “Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. And the
Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to His temple; and the messenger of the
covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts.
– The Blessing for Them was the Promised Messiah; the Blessing for us: a reminder of the Messiah
– The “me” in Malachi 3:1 is… God. The “messenger” in Malachi 3:1 is John the Baptist
– The Judahites Had No Idea they Needed Saving from Their Sin
– They Wanted their Enemies Crushed b/c for them that was Justice…
– They would Not Get What they Wanted…
– God gave them (and us) Infinitely More…
– They Foolishly Demanded Justice. Praise God that He Ignored their Request and Praise God He
gave them Grace Instead…
Malachi 3:2 But who can endure the day of His coming, and who can stand when He appears?

For He is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap.

– The 1 st Coming of Christ will be an infinite Blessing for His people – but, at the same time…

– We will be Told to Carry our Cross & Follow Him…
– The Purification& Refining that comes through the Savior will not be Easy…
– Fullers’ Soap – a Fuller would scour cloth in a mill through an exceedingly harsh cleansing
process to make wool white. With Christ, Comes a Difficult Refinement for His
People

Mal 3:3 He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and He will purify the sons of Levi
and refine them like gold and silver, and they will bring offerings in
righteousness to the Lord.

– Because Christ is Coming, Worship will be made RIGHT
Mal 3:4 Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the

days of old and as in former years.

– So… Is the Question of God’s Justice being Answered here at all?
– It is!
– the 1st Coming of Christ is Infinite Grace & Blessing for the Bride of Christ – all
those Saved by Grace for All Time…
– and those who are not so Saved – they are Judged, Ultimately, by Christ…
Malachi 3:5 “Then I will draw near to you for judgment. I will be a swift witness against the
sorcerers, against the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, against those
who oppress the hired worker in his wages, the widow and the fatherless, against
those who thrust aside the sojourner, and do not fear me, says the Lord of hosts.

– He who is Coming is Both Savior and Judge
Rev 19:11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is
called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war.
God the Holy Spirit Speaks through Malachi and Answers their Reprimand…
– they Wanted to Know Where Justice was… Perfect Justice is Served by Christ…
– Perfect Justice is Served on the Cross…
– There all the Enemies of God were Defeated and there Perfect Justice was Served
in yet Another way…
– The Penalty for our Sin was Experienced by Christ – No Sin Goes unpunished…
– Praise God – they got more than Justice…
– Perfect grace was Coming through He who died on the Cross & Rose Again
– We Will Not Get What We Deserve, Because Christ took what we Deserved and Gave
Us His Righteousness as well…
– What we Earned, He Experienced — What He earned, We Experience…
– Heaven is Ours by Grace…

– Grace at the Cross Did Not Come at the Expense of Perfect Justice
– No Sin Goes Unpunished for the Spiritual Israel, the Punishment was
Experienced by Christ
– For those not Saved – they will Pay the Penalty Themselves – Deservedly
– The Father did not vent His Wrath Against an Innocent Christ…
– Christ was Guilty of Our Sin – and Justly Experienced God’s Wrath Against that Sin…
– Christ was Innocent Himself – but Chose to be Guilty on Our Behalf
2 Cor 5:21 For our sake He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might

become the righteousness of God.
Ephesians 3:20,21

Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at
work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and

ever. Amen.
