Malachi 3:7-3:15

Malachi 3:7-3:15

– Another Reprimand is given, and God’s Grace Flows to Us Through the Reprimand…
Mal 3:7 From the days of your fathers you have turned aside from my statutes and have
not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you, says the Lord of hosts. But
you say, ‘How shall we return?’

– The Judahites were Disobedient. The Issue was Not Just being Entitled and Illicitly Judging God.
In general, they were Disobedient
– How can they Return?
John 15:5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is

that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

James 1:17,18 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the
Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. 18 of
His own will he brought us forth by the word of truth…

– The Impelling Word of God is this… God moves us to repent/obey through His Word in that the
Holy Spirit then illumines the Word then the Holy Spirit implants within us the desire to
repent/obey and we repent/obey and are blessed and bless others
– The Lord Gives them Some Specifics…
– The Lord tells them of Two Areas where they have Fallen Short – Tithing and Sacrificial
Giving in General…
Mal 3:8-12 Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, ‘How have we robbed
you?’ In your tithes and contributions. 9 You are cursed with a curse, for you are
robbing me, the whole nation of you. 10 Bring the whole tithe into the
storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says
the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and
pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.  11 I
will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will
not drop their fruit before it is ripe,” says the Lord Almighty. 12 Then all the
nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land,” says
the Lord Almighty.

– One Aspect of Returning to the Lord involves our Giving. We Return in His Power — by His
Grace as He moves us to be more Giving
– More than Money is in View. This speaks to Service to the Faith Community in General &
involves Service of Every Type
– We are to Return by Building up the Body Of Christ…
Eph 4:11,12 And He gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and
teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body
of Christ

To What Degree do We Sacrificially Give to the better Good of the Kingdom?
– Church is Not a Spectator Sport – Church is a Place to Serve and be Served…
– The Judahites at the Time of Malachi Were so self serving that they asked “What is in it for me if
I Serve the Kingdom?”
Mal 3:13,14 “Your words have been hard against me, says the Lord. But you say, ‘How have
we spoken against you?’ 14 You have said, ‘It is vain to serve God. What is the
profit of our keeping His charge or of walking as in mourning before the Lord of
hosts?

– We need to Pray for Protection Against such a Self-Serving Mindset. Service should be for the
Benefit of others and for the Glory of God done in Love for the Lord. We Cannot “Give to the
Lord” for He has Everything Already So we are to Love the Lord by Loving and Serving His
People and we should not even think in terms of “What is in it for me?”
– The Judahites Do Not See Their Sin but sure can see Sin in Others. They Blame God – again –
for Not Making “Those Sinners Pay.” The Complaining to God Continues…
Mali 3:15 And now we call the arrogant blessed. Evildoers not only prosper but they put

God to the test and they escape.’”

Practical Counsel from Our Text…
– We can Easily see the Sin in others but need to see our Own Sin
– We can Easily View Everything – Including our Interactions at Church -as being all about
“What is in it for me?”
– We can Easily fall into a mindset of Complaint Against God
– We can Easily set back and Expect the Kingdom to Serve Us without Our making
suitable Effort to Serve the Kingdom
– We are to be part of an Every-Member Ministry
– All of us together should work – as a group – to Sacrificially be a blessing to Others as an
expression of Love for God through Christ

– Why would we do this?
– we give as an expression of love for the Lord
– we should give without expecting return…
– we give because as we give our Loved Ones are Blessed
– This Section of Malachi is a Call to “Return to Me” and we are taught that to “Return to the
Lord” Consists in Loving Him by Sacrificially Loving and Serving those He has Placed Around
us…
– Like All Reprimands, this is a Wonderful Lesson for Each of Us…
1 Cor 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in
the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.
