Philippians 3:10-15

If you were asked…

What do you desire more than anything for yourself in this life?

… what would be your answer?

Phil 3:10,11        that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and may share His sufferings, becoming like Him in his death, 11 that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.

–              Paul Desires to Know Christ More and More with each passing day of his life —

Is this a desire that we have?             This should be the pinnacle desire of our lives

What should be our Deepest Desire for Our Loved ones?

–              It should be that they too would Know the Lord more Fully Day by Day… and that they too would revel in His Greatness and Enjoy Him all the more…

–              Paul is saying that he desires to experience being raised from the dead onto eternal life upon his own physical death

–              The Grace of God in Christ is so Great in Paul that he does not fear — but embraces suffering in this world — so as to experience Resurrection to be with Christ…

Phil 3:12              Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.

–              Paul’s Heart was Enlightened to Realize that knowing the Lord Better Day-by-Day means that he is on a Journey and that effort must be exerted upon that Journey…  knowing that each day is a day where we can grow closer to God…

Do we view each Day as a new chance to know the Lord better?

Do we view each Day as a new chance to watch the Lord at work Growing our Loved one towards Him?

Do we realize each Day each day is a journey with Incremental Growth?

Phil 3:13              Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,

–              Paul’s Heart was Enlightened to Realize that the day-by-day journey to Know God Better is a journey not taken in his own power …

the effort exerted is fueled by God’s Grace as Paul depends upon Grace to move him closer to the Lord…  Part of the pursuit is seeking after such Grace through Prayer…

–              We Cannot Move Closer to God in our own Power…   He must move us Closer to Him…

and we seek after His Grace that He would so bless us and our Loved ones…

–              Yet in this we are Active and Press Forward in His Power…

Phil 3:14,15        I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. 15 Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you.

–              An Important Reality About this Journey to Know the Lord Better Day-by-Day… Requires a second look at an earlier verse…

Phil 3:13              Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,

–              A Forward Journey has Little Time to Look Back…

our past is behind us…  our difficulties and our failures then are not critical now…

What matters is not where we have been but…

where He has us now and…

where He is taking us in the Future…

–              A Healthy View of Our Past…

–              Do not dwell upon our failures  except to generally solidify in our mind & heart the general principle that we need the Grace of God in Christ…

–              If we are Honest, we tend to struggle with how we view the Past…it is tempting to dwell upon what we wanted but did not get…  we tend to dwell upon unmet “needs”  that are really unmet “wants”    this leads to a Present Reality where we Pursue our Unmet Wants…

–              Instead we should be:

Thankful for our Past

Content with our Present

Excited about our Future Journey

–              A Healthy View of Our Past…

–              we Dwell on the Grace of God Experienced in our past and Thank and Praise Him…

–              we Dwell upon those great times where God’s Grace carried us through the tough times…

that we would Thank and Praise Him…

–              we see our past in view of His blessings and Praise Him…

–              we look to the future where, freed from our past, we Pursue Knowledge in Him and loving Him by Loving Others…

The Take Home Message

–              We are on a Journey…

–              where we should see each day as a new chance to Watch the Lord at work in us, around us, and through us

–              We should be:     Thankful for our Past

Excited about the Future…
