Preparing for 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12

Preparing for 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12

– Speculation…
– guessing possible explanations without having enough information to be certain…
– Speculation typically requires the use of Assumptions…
– For Your Consideration…
– Almost every Principle in the Bible is clear if we Interpret Scripture with Scripture and
have no presuppositions
– Very Few Principles in the Bible require Speculation
– but Some Areas of the Bible do Require some Speculation…
– For Your Consideration…
– We Do Not Want to teach Beyond what the Bible Teaches…
– We do not want to Teach as Certain what is Speculation…
– 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12
– Might be about the 70AD Jewish War where God Uses the Roman Army Under Titus to
Judge Ethnic Israel & Destroy the Idolatrous Temple, or…
– Might be about the 2nd Coming of Christ which is the Judgment of the World, or…
– Might be in some way about Both
– Involves the “Man of Lawlessness” who Might be an Antichrist; Might be the
Antichrist; Might be a man in the 1st Century or Might be a man in the Last Century;
Might not be a man at all but instead Represent Human Rebellion against Christ/God
2 Thes 2:1-4 Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered
together to Him, we ask you, brothers,  2 not to be quickly shaken in mind
or alarmed, either by a spirit or a spoken word, or a letter seeming to be from us,
to the effect that the day of the Lord has come.  3 Let no one deceive you in any
way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of
lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction 4 who opposes and exalts himself
against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the
temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God.

– A Quote from Augustine… “On the man of lawlessness, I frankly confess I do not know what
the Scriptures mean; but I do know that the man of lawlessness, whoever or whenever he is, is
defeated by the Lord and we thus can rest confident in the might of our Savior and king.”
– “What does the Bible say of Antichrist?”

– nothing in the Old Testament mentions any antichrist…
– Jesus never mentioned Antichrist – no mention of Antichrist is found in the 4
Gospels – Paul, Peter, James — never mention antichrist
– Revelation never uses the word Antichrist…
– The only two places in the entire Bible where “Antichrist” can be found are in
the two short epistles of 1st and 2nd John – only 4 verses in the Bible address
Antichrist

1 Jn 2:18 Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so
now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour.

1 Jn 2:22 Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist,

he who denies the Father and the Son

1 Jn 4:3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of
the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already
2 Jn 1:7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess the
coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist.”

– Antichrist Summary…
– there are many Antichrists. An Antichrist will deny the 1st and/or 2nd coming of Christ
& will try to deceive others. The Bible does not teach that there will be One Final
Singular World-renown Antichrist that will be there just before Christ Returns… if we
believe that there will be one such final antichrist of note we so based on speculation
alone
The Take-Home Message
– Almost every Principle in the Bible is clear if we Interpret Scripture with Scripture and
have no presuppositions
– Very few Principles in the Bible require Speculation
– When a Passage requires Speculation we need to admit that any view we hold is
Speculative
– Even in Biblical Areas Requiring Speculation, we do not want to “Quench the Spirit” and
say the details do not matter… we should attempt Earnestly to give sound speculations…
– we should not teach beyond what the Scriptures enable. Iif we must assert something as
speculative, we need to state that it is speculation
– Antichrist is addressed in but 4 verses total…
– Antichrist is any non-believer who denies Father/Son and who teaches that the Christ did
not come in the flesh…
– There were, are, and will be in the future countless Antichrists – nothing more definitive
than that can be spoken of without speculation
– The Big Picture is this…
– There are Rebellious People and Enemies of God; they will wield power while on earth
& they will deny God, deny Christ & influence many. But, God will intervene and Judge
them. We, God’s people, can “rest confident in the might of our Savior and king.”
2 Cor 2:14 But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and

through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of Him everywhere.

Deut 20:4 For the Lord your God is He who goes with you to fight for you against your

enemies, to give you the victory.

Eph 1:11 In Him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the
purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will
